I honestly don't know what to make of this story. The Eagles, who already have Donovan McNabb and his heir apparent Kevin Kolb at quarterback, have reportedly been in contact with the Green Bay Packers about the availability of Brett Favre, according to ESPN and Sporting News. Apparently, the Packers called the Eagles to see if they had any interest in trading for the possibly unretired quarterback. There is no word on whether the Eagles actually want Favre, but it's hard to see what his role would be in Philly.
Obviously, Favre would be an excellent fit because he knows the West Coast offense, but where would he fit in on the depth chart? He would be great insurance if/when McNabb gets injured, but until that happens he would ride the bench, something he didn't want to do for the Packers. And, where would this leave the development of Kolb, who would see his growth stunted by having two star quarterbacks playing ahead of him?
I am not sure what the Eagles are thinking, but they are now on the list of teams that have expressed interest in Favre. Atlanta, Washington, Tampa Bay and Carolina are the other teams that want Favre, and they would all install him as their starter.
Don't count on Favre being an Eagle, but it's interesting that the Eagles would even talk to the Packers about him. It would probably take a 2nd and 3rd round draft pick at most, which isn't a hefty price to pay, but Favre simply doesn't fit in on this team unless McNabb's shoulder is bothering him worse than he's been leading on.
One other theory: the Eagles are looking to acquire Favre and ship him off to the Vikings. The Vikings are the team that wants Favre the most but the Packers won't trade him to their rival. Enter the Eagles, who could trade for Favre and then send him to Minnesota and turn a small profit off the deal. I would bet that the Packers would want assurances from the Eagles that they wouldn't trade Favre before they made any deal, so this doesn't seem likely either.
