Finally, the Sixers fire Eddie Jordan

The inevitable has finally happened. In what was really the worst kept secret in Philadelphia, one day after their season ended, the Sixers have fired head coach Eddie Jordan after one season. Jordan leaves the Sixers after clearly losing all respect from the players in an abysmal 27-55 season. Nothing Jordan tried with the Sixers worked, including the vaunted Princeton offense he tried to install despite the fact that the personnel in Philly didn't match that system.

From the start of the season, it was clear the Jordan was a bad hire by Ed Stefanski. Stefanski couldn't see past the guy he worked with in New Jersey to see the poor track record Jordan already had in Washington as a head coach. Couple this bad coaching hire with several questionable personnel moves and you have to believe that the Sixers brass will at least discuss removing Stefanski from the GM position as well.

Good riddance, Eddie Jordan. This Sixers team has some talent and can play much better if they are given a system that plays to their strengths and a coach that stresses actually having to play defense. Your guess is as good as mine on who the Sixers go out and hire next; of course, if the rumors are true, we might be seeing Larry Brown back in Philly once again. Hopefully the Sixers have learned from their past mistakes and don't go and get another retread NBA coach; instead, they should look for a smart, energetic assistant coach who can grow with the young guys already on the roster.

Sixers to fire Eddie Jordan

Kate Fagan of the Inquirer is reporting some of the best Sixers news I've heard in a while: Eddie Jordan is going to be fired. According to Fagan, Jordan could be fired at any time but will definitely not be the coach of the Sixers after this season.

All I have to say is that it's about time. Many, including me, rolled their eyes when GM Ed Stefanski made the obvious hire of a coach he had previously worked with despite the fact that Jordan has had very little success in the NBA. Now, after leading the Sixers to a 23-40 record, it's clear that Jordan's "vaunted" Princeton offense isn't working and that the Sixers are terrible defensively.

Fagan also reports that the Sixers will be evaluating Ed Stefanski and that he may be on the way out, too. As much as I like Stefanski as a person, he has made a series of questionable moves that no good GM would make. He probably should be fired for the Elton Brand contract alone.

It's time for a whole new regime for the Sixers, hopefully one that can get the team out of the doldrums they are currently stuck in. There is some talent there and the right coach can find a way to get this team at least playing .500 basketball.

No surprise here: Sixers hire Eddie Jordan to coach

We all knew Sixers GM Ed Stefanski would hire someone that he was comfortable with to coach the Philadelphia Sixers, so it came as no surprise when the Sixers announced today that they have hired Eddie Jordan to be the Head Coach. Jordan, who worked with Stefanski in New Jersey, signed a three year contract with the Sixers. Jordan previously coached the Washington Wizards for 4 years and built up a career record of 230-288.

Jordan's career record is pretty bad, so hopefully Stefanski knows something about Jordan that we don't. As long as Jordan is willing to let the team get out and run, he should be a good fit for the Sixers. His greatest challenge will likely be trying to figure out how to integrate Elton Brand into the team.

The Sixers won't sell a lot of tickets with the hiring of Jordan, but that doesn't mean it was a bad move. Hopefully this hiring is not a case of nepotism and is instead a move for an underrated coach. Only time will tell, but hopefully he can be more successful than the other coaches that have come in and out of town since Larry Brown was here.
