And the defenseman trend continues for the Flyers. According to Bob McKenzie of TSN, the Flyers have signed 39 year old veteran defenseman Sean O'Donnell to a 1 year, 1 million dollar contract.
O'Donnell is a 15 year NHL veteran who has played over a thousand games for the Kings, Wild, Bruins, Coyotes and Ducks. A solid stay-at-home defenseman, O'Donnell is aging but still has plenty left to contribute. A very physical player, O'Donnell also has been remarkably healthy for the last few seasons and has had a positive plus/minus in nearly every season of his career.
With O'Donnell in the mix, the Flyers are now set on defense with Chris Pronger, Matt Carle, Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, Andrej Mezsaros as the top 5 and O'Donnell and Oskars Bartulis battling for the 6th spot. It's looking increasingly likely that the Flyers will go with this group on defense and hope they hold down the fort in front of Michael Leighton. Considering how strong this defense looks on paper, I'd say that's not a bad strategy.
