Jason Peters ruptures Achilles tendon, may be lost for the season

The Eagles got some terrible news today: Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jason Peters suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon and will have surgery next week.  Peters suffered the injury while training for the upcoming season and likely won't be ready to play until late in the 2012 season, if at all.

This is a huge blow to the Eagles who now must fill a big hole on their offensive line.  They did announce the re-signing of King Dunlap today but that won't be a solution.  Look for them to draft an o-lineman in the first round and possibly look to trade for or sign another veteran left tackle in free agency.

For a team that looked set heading into the 2012 season, losing their best offensive lineman certainly throws a wrench into the Eagles plans.  What looked like a smooth, successful offseason plan now has been thrown off course.

Vick, Maclin both ruled out against the Giants

Whatever slim chance the Eagles had of beating the Giants likely just went out the window.  According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, both Michael Vick and Jeremy Maclin have been ruled out for the Sunday Night Game.  Vick suffered a rib injury against the Cardinals while Maclin injured his hamstring.

There really wasn't much of a chance that either player could have played on Sunday, what with neither player practicing all week.  Still, the Eagles hadn't ruled them out until today with the hopes that one or both could recover in time.

In Vick's place, Vince Young gets his first start as an Eagle.  Riley Cooper will likely play a much bigger role with Maclin out.  It could be a long night for the Eagles offense.

Eagles vs. Redskins Week 6 inactives

The Eagles and Redskins have announced their Week 6 inactive players:

With Dunlap out, the Eagles will start Todd Herremans at left tackle and Winston Justice at right tackle.  This will be Justice's first start of the season and he will be protecting Vick's blind side.  This could go badly.

Obviously, this is a must-win game for the Eagles this week.  Scarily enough, if they do win, they will be right back in the mix for the NFC East division.  I'll believe it when I see it.

Eagles sign DT Derek Landri to replace Antonio Dixon

Not only did the Eagles lose in embarrassing fashion to the Niners on Sunday, they also lost one of their defensive tackles for the season.  Antonio Dixon was placed on injured reserve by the Eagles after injuring his tricep.  Dixon is a promising young player but this injury shouldn't affect him long-term.

To replace Dixon on the roster, the Eagles signed Derek Landri, who spent the preseason with the Birds.  He is a high-motor guy who looked impressive but was on the outside looking in when the Eagles set their initial 53 man roster.  Don't expect much of a drop-off when Landri gets on the field.

Eagles vs. Niners inactives: Maclin to play

The Eagles and the Niners announced their inactive players for their Week 4 matchup:

Despite his injured hamsting, Jeremy Maclin is suiting up.  The only change in the inactives from last week is that Jaiquawn Jarrett is suiting up for the first time of the year and Brandon Hughes is benched.  There are two new starters on defense as Brandon Rolle is starting at WILL and Nate Allen is starting at free safety.

For the Niners, Frank Gore is suiting up but shouldn't have much burst due to a bad ankle.  Kendall Hunter will even start at running back ahead of Gore.

Its only Week 4 but this is pretty much a must-win for the Eagles.  If they lose to this weak Niners team and go 1-3 you can kiss the playoffs goodbye.

Michael Vick didn't break his hand, could play next week

Good news has been few and far between for the Eagles this season, so this was nice to hear: Michael Vick did not break his hand against the Giants yesterday.  According to Andy Reid, a CT scan showed no fracture in Vick's hand and the team is calling the injury a hand contusion.  While there were some reports that Vick could be out 3-4 weeks with a broken hand, Reid implied that Vick could be ready to go against the Niners next week.

As long as the Eagles are telling the truth about the injury, Vick won't be out for very long, if at all.  Now if only Vick could play linebacker.

Michael Vick breaks right hand, Maclin injures hamstring

Another week, another Michael Vick injury that knocks him out of the game.  This time, Vick has broken his right hand and was removed from the Giants game in the 4th quarter.  Mike Kafka has once again taken over under center.

With the way Vick plays and the way the offensive line has issues protecting him, he is going to continue to get knocked around this season.  At least it wasn't his head this time and at least it wasn't his throwing hand.

In other Eagles injury news, Jeremy Maclin was knocked out of the game against the Giants with a hamstring injury.  This season has been nothing short of a nightmare so far.

Eagles vs. Giants Week 3 Inactives

The Eagles and Giants announced their inactives for their week 3 contest:

As expected, Michael Vick is ready to start for the Eagles.  Vince Young is also active for the Eagles and presumably will be the third string quarterback.  Parker and Tapp are both out, as expected, so we should see plenty of Philip Hunt.

For the Giants offense, Manningham is out though Hakeem Nicks will play.  The Giants defense should be ripe for the picking so expect a big day from Vick.

Michael Vick forced out of Sunday Night game with a concussion

UPDATE: According to Andy Reid, Vick had a concussion.

Uh oh.  After knocking his head into Todd Herremans in the third quarter, Michael Vick had to leave the Sunday Night game against the Falcons with an apparent neck injury.  There is no word yet if he will return to the game.

Bigger uh oh: with Vince Young out, the Eagles are going to turn to Mike Kafka to maintain their slim lead.  In Shady McCoy we trust!

Eagles and Falcons announce Week 2 inactives

Jason Peters is active after there was some question as to whether he would play.  Rookie Danny Watkins is active for the first time in his career but won't likely see playing time unless there is an injury.  With Tapp out, Philip Hunt makes his NFL debut and should see a few snaps.

With Michael Vick making his return to Atlanta, this should be a fun one tonight.  A 2-0 start in a pair of road games would be huge for the Eagles.

Eagles and Rams Week One Inactives: Steve Smith active

The Eagles and the Rams announced the following inactive players for their Week One game:

Surprisingly, Steve Smith is active and ready to go for the Eagles.  I wouldn't expect him to get a ton of playing time just yet.  Danny Watkins certainly has fallen fast, going from starter to not even being active.  With Justice not ready to play and Vandervelde scratched, the Eagles will go with only two backup linemen, Jamaal Jackson and King Dunlap.  Vince Young is still dealing with injury issues so Mike Kafka is the backup quarterback.

Here we go, Week One is finally here!  Many "experts" are picking the Rams to upset the Eagles but you can bet the "dream team" has plenty to prove.  GO BIRDS!

Vince Young hurt as Eagles wrap up preseason

The Eagles wrapped up their preseason with a victory over the Jets on Thursday night, winning 24-14. While the 4th preseason game is completely meaningless except for players on the roster bubble, the Eagles did get a small scare when Vince Young hurt his hamstring and had to leave the game. Young will have an MRI tomorrow but the initial speculation is that he should be healthy enough to backup Michael Vick in Week 1.

Prior to getting hurt, Young was solid for the Eagles, leading the team on two touchdown-scoring drives. Mike Kafka took over after Young got hurt and nearly also got knocked out of the game with a rib injury.

The preseason is finally over and the Eagles were lucky to escape with only a few minor injuries. With Week 1 just a week away, its time to get excited. Real football is back!

Eagles Patterson diagnosed with brain AVM

The diagnosis is in on Eagles DT Mike Patterson, who collapsed before practice yesterday: he has a serious condition known as brain AVM that may require surgery or radiation to treat.

Brain AVM is a tangle of arteries and veins in the brain and can cause seizures, headaches and bleeding on the brain. Patterson does not have any bleeding on the brain at this time so the hope is that the doctors caught it early.

While the condition sounds scary, the fact that he had the seizure is actually a good thing. Without the seizure, the AVM would never have been diagnosed. Now Patterson can get all the treatment he needs and hopefully live a long, healthy life.

Obviously, at this time, there is no word on whether he can play football again, not that that even matters right now.

Eagles DT Mike Patterson is stable after morning collapse

Scary moment out of Lehigh this morning as Eagles DT Mike Patterson had convulsions, collapsed and was sent to the hospital on a stretcher. The early word from the Eagles is that Patterson is alert and in stable condition at the hospital. It sounds like he was dehydrated though he is still going through tests.

Training camp collapses are always a scary thing as big bodies don't mix well with heat. Patterson collapsed before the drills even started so his body clearly wasn't ready for the warm weather. I'll update as more news comes out but, thank goodness, it sounds like Patterson is going to be ok.

Leonard Weaver's career may be over

Don't count on seeing Leonard Weaver in an Eagles uniform, or any NFL uniform, ever again. According to CSN Philly, Weaver just had his third major operation to help repair his ACL that he shredded way back in Week 1 of the NFL season. The report goes on to say that Weaver still can't even lift his foot and that there have been very few cases of players returning from an injury as severe as Weaver suffered. As anyone who follows him on Twitter can attest to, Weaver sounds optimistic about returning to the Eagles, but this report makes it sound very unlikely that he is going to play another down of football in his life.

On the field, the Eagles will miss Weaver, but their offense isn't one that relies on a fullback to do all that much. Sure, it would be nice to have a big back like Weaver in short yardage situations, but with Michael Vick under center, a quarterback sneak is probably a better option. Weaver was also a decent threat in the passing game, something that Owen Schmitt, his replacement for the season, never really was. Still, while there is a drop-off from Weaver to someone like Schmitt, in the Eagles offense, it really won't hurt them all that much.

Eagles vs. Packers Wild Card Game Inactives: No Bradley or Jean-Gilles

The Eagles and Packers have announced their inactive players for their playoff showdown:

Packers: S Atari Bigby, G Evan Dietrich-Smith, CB Josh Gordy, DT Howard Green, FB Korey Hall, QB Graham Harrell, G Nick McDonald, LB Frank Zombo

The Eagles will be without two starters for this game as Jean-Gilles and Bradley are unable to go. Filling in at right guard will be Nick Cole, who hasn't started a game since Week 11. Filling in at middle linebacker for Bradley will once again be Jamar Chaney, who has done quite well considering he is just a rookie. There was some hope that Bradley would be able to play today but apparently his elbow just isn't strong enough for him to be effective.

This one promises to be a good one, folks. The Eagles and Packers are very closely matched and there should be plenty of offensive fireworks. Let's hope Michael Vick can work his magic. GO BIRDS!

Eagles bring back a familiar face to replace Jeff Owens

To replace rookie Jeff Owens, who ruptured his patellar tendon in his first action of the season and was placed on injured reserve, the Eagles have signed a familiar face: DT Jeremy Clark. Clark, who spent one year on the Eagles practice squad back in 2007 after being signed as a rookie free agent, has been a journeyman in his short NFL career, spending time with the Giants, Falcons, Cardinals, Cowboys and Redskins. He has played a total of 6 games and could see some action on Sunday when the Eagles play a meaningless game against the Cowboys.

Owens is the 10th Eagle to be placed on Injured Reserve this season. You have to feel for the kid, who spent the entire season on the practice squad before finally seeing some action in Week 16 only to subsequently have a major injury. Depending on how he recovers from his injury, Owens should have a future with the Birds.

Eagles lose Jorrick Calvin for the season

The Eagles have lost another player for the season: DB/KR Jorrick Calvin has been placed on IR due to a back injury. Calvin, who was acquired back in August from the Cardinals, has had an unremarkable season which has mostly been limited to kickoff return duty. While he has had his moments, Calvin is a mediocre returner at best.

There is no word as of now from the Eagles as to who will replace Calvin on the roster and who will return kicks. It's possible that the Eagles will turn to Chad Hall for returns or they could bring in someone of the street with some experience in the role.

Calvin is the 9th Eagle to be placed on IR this season. He joins Nate Allen, Brandon Graham, Antoine Harris, Ellis Hobbs, Jamaal Jackson, Marlin Jackson, Ricky Sapp and Leonard Weaver on the sidelines.

Eagles lose Nate Allen for the year

There was one downer in an otherwise amazing Sunday of Eagles football: Nate Allen injured his knee and is out for the season. The rookie safety, who was drafted by the Eagles with the pick they acquired from the Redskins for Donovan McNabb, ruptured his patellar tendon and will be placed on injured reserve.

Allen had a great September but has since hit the wall down the stretch. He was still a steady contributor and will be missed, though fellow rookie Kurt Coleman should be able to step in and do an adequate job.

With Brandon Graham and Ellis Hobbs already done for the year and Stewart Bradley still out for a few weeks, the Eagles defense is starting to look pretty banged up. Luckily, they don't have to be great, they just need to be healthy enough to keep games close and let Michael Vick do his thing in the 4th quarter.

Eagles lose Graham for the season, Bradley for a few weeks

The Eagles defense, which has hardly been rock solid this season, got some bad news today: rookie defensive end Brandon Graham will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL against the Cowboys last night. The Eagles believe he will need surgery and he will soon be placed on Injured Reserve. While Graham wasn't a starter, he did see significant snaps and had 3 sacks on the season. Look for Darryl Tapp and possibly Daniel Te'o-Nesheim to get increased playing time.

The Eagles got some better news with another injured defensive player as Stewart Bradley will not need surgery after dislocating his elbow. Expect Bradley to miss a few weeks and possibly the rest of the regular season but he should be good to go when the playoffs roll around. In his absence, don't be surprised if the Eagles go with rookie Jamar Chaney at middle linebacker instead of veteran backup Omar Gaither. Gaither was inactive against the Cowboys while Chaney seemed to hold his own after Bradley went down.

Finally, all signs point to Asante Samuel returning next week. With Graham and Bradley out, the Eagles will definitely need their playmaker back to help slow down the Giants offense.
