"Hockey Mom" Sarah Palin will drop the first puck for the Flyers season

Who's bright idea was this? Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin will drop the first puck at the Flyers home opener on Saturday against the Rangers. With Pennsylvania being a swing state, Palin is hoping to win over a few more voters by making an appearance with the Flyers.

I'm not going to get into politics here because that's not what this blog is about, but is this really a good idea? Palin has been under some heavy scrutiny, and knowing how Philadelphia fans tend to act, I don't see how she isn't met with a resounding chorus of boos. Sure, some will cheer, but Palin is such a polarizing figure that people either love or hate.

From the Flyers perspective, it's hard to say if they are endorsing Palin or not. On the one hand, they could just be taking advantage of the media attention they are going to get, on the other I don't hear any announcements about Joe Biden dropping the puck in the near future.

Love her or hate her, Sarah Palin will be kicking off the Flyers 2008/2009 season. In a few weeks that could either be a really cool moment or a really embarassing blunder. I am sure you all have your own opinions already.

  1. This is the most ridiculous thing the Flyers could ever pull. Luckily for our neighbors, we gave them our tickets for Saturday night's game. We refuse to watch the public endorsement of such a ridiculous candidate. Ed Snider's just as dumb about politics as he is about his sports teams.

  2. It's a little bit different for Palin because she has the whole "hockey mom" image going on, and she's a big hockey fan from Alaska. makes a little more sense for her to be doing this. I think it's more of her showing her hockey fandom than a political stunt.

  3. Dustin, I think you misinterpreted "hockey mom". It doesn't mean she's a fan, it means her kids play hockey.

This is nothing more than a ridiculous publicity stunt.

  4. I hope to God that our true Flyers fans out there boo this woman mercilessly.

Also, remember that she has already made PR appearences with both the Red Wings and the Penguins.... Philly is third fiddle... I don't think the fans should take that lightly...

    Boo this woman harshly...

  6. In the 40 years my family has held Philadelphia Flyers’ season tickets, I can only once remember politics entering the arena of play. That was January 11, 1976, when the Soviet Red Army team came to town, and my mom and I and 17,000 of our friends went down to the Spectrum to collectively say, “Not in our country. And certainly not in our house.” It was the Cold War; we were united that day. The Flyers won the game, and with it, the respect of the league.

Now they risk losing the same, as Flyers’ owner Ed Snider waves a bright red flag of another kind, invoking politics in our house and inviting Republican VP nominee and “hockey mom” Sarah Palin to drop the puck at Saturday’s Flyers-Rangers tilt — bringing public scorn and ridicule to what is otherwise one of the classiest organizations in all of sport....

  7. I would guess that an NHL hockey crowd in Philly would lean slightly Republican, so she'll probably get a healthy mix of cheers and boos. And who knows, maybe some fights will start in the arena.

  10. I hate Sarah Palin and the Flyers even more now than I did before. It's ridiculous that the Flyers got such a controversial person, and I hate the Flyers with a passion as it is.
